The role of physical touch in reducing anxiety and stress

In today’s busy world, where stress and emotional tension accompany us almost every day, more and more people are looking for effective ways to relax and soothe. One of the most powerful and oldest tools for dealing with anxiety and stress is physical touch. Its beneficial properties are confirmed by both scientific research and centuries-old traditions that valued touch as a form of healing.

1. Physiological effects of touch

Physical touch affects the functioning of our body in a way that helps reduce stress and anxiety. During touch, massage or tender contact with another person, our body begins to secrete the hormone oxytocin – called the “love hormone” or “attachment hormone”. Oxytocin lowers the level of cortisol, which is the main stress hormone. As a result, the feeling of fear, tension and anxiety is reduced.

Additionally, stimulation of touch receptors in the skin activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the state of relaxation and regeneration. This is the so-called “rest and digest system” that helps lower blood pressure, slow heart rate and bring the body back to a state of equilibrium. Through these processes, regular experiences of touch – in the form of massage, cuddling or touch therapy – can effectively reduce chronic stress and anxiety.

2. Touch and anxiety reduction

Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by excessive worry, tension and difficulty relaxing. In many cases, people suffering from anxiety may experience physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension or sleep problems. Physical touch, especially in the form of massage, can help alleviate these symptoms, allowing the body to deeply relax.

Massage therapy is particularly effective in reducing the symptoms of anxiety. Studies show that regular massage sessions can significantly reduce anxiety levels in people suffering from various forms of anxiety disorders. This is not only a reduction in subjectively experienced symptoms, but also objective indicators such as lower levels of cortisol in the blood or reduction in muscle tension.

3. Touch as a tool for communication and closeness

In addition to its physiological benefits, touch also plays a key role in emotional communication. Through touch, we express support, empathy, love and understanding. In interpersonal relationships, touch helps build a sense of security and closeness, which is extremely important in the context of dealing with stress and anxiety.

In situations where words may not be enough, touch is often the most effective way to show support to the other person. Simply putting a hand on the shoulder, hugging or cuddling can bring relief in difficult moments, acting as a natural remedy for anxiety and tension.

4. Massage as a form of therapeutic touch

One of the most effective forms of physical touch in the fight against stress and anxiety is massage. Massages such as relaxation massage, aromatherapy massage or deep tissue massage can significantly improve our emotional well-being. Regular massage sessions not only relieve muscle tension, but also help regenerate the mind, calming negative thoughts and emotions.

In therapeutic massage, the most important thing is the ability to work with the client’s energy. Through their touches, the masseur is able to release emotions accumulated in the body, helping the patient regain psychophysical balance. At the UNITAS Center in Poznań, I have the opportunity to work with various techniques that effectively support the mental health of my clients. Massage in such an environment, where other therapists also cooperate, creates ideal conditions for holistic work on health and well-being.

The GALOS Salt Cave, where I offer sessions, enriches the therapy with additional elements that promote the regeneration of the nervous system. The environment rich in microelements offered by the cave supports deep relaxation, which makes this type of therapy an extremely effective tool in the fight against stress and anxiety.

5. Emotional benefits of touch

It is also worth mentioning the long-term emotional benefits resulting from regular sessions of physical touch. Touch affects our ability to regulate emotions, improves mood, and increases resistance to stressful situations. By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, touch helps us cope better with difficult emotions like sadness, anxiety, and frustration. In the long run, it can lead to improved sleep, increased self-esteem, and overall mental well-being.
